Growing up, I had a pretty good childhood until my father, who was the only one providing for us, got sick and passed away. My mother, who had never worked a day in her life, was now trying her best to look after all of us. We had to deal with a lot of issues and money was especially tight. My dream of going to university seemed like a distant reality and I felt like all my hopes were gone. Despite the roadblocks, I worked hard and managed to do well on my ICCE test.
I looked everywhere online for a scholarship for the course I wanted to take but didn't have any luck. One Sunday, I prayed for help in church, and after the service, one of the church members came up to me. She had heard about my situation and told me about the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Community Scholarship. She said she would do her best to get my application to Sunway University, even though it was past the deadline. It felt like God put this opportunity in place for me, so I went for it with help from Malaysian CARE. They helped me get all the documents together and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I gave it my all and got shortlisted for the scholarship interview.
I remembered how Malaysian CARE was there for me every step of the way, helping me to get ready for the scholarship interview. Even though I was pretty scared during the interview, I managed to stay calm and remembered the tips they gave me. I guess it paid off because a few weeks later Sunway University contacted me to say I was accepted. I was totally blown away; it was the best feeling ever when I realised I was going to uni. It's like, sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure it's not a dream.
When I first stepped onto the campus, I couldn't believe I'd actually been accepted! Everyone was so friendly and it didn't take long to adjust and make heaps of friends. Over the last few months, I've had the chance to get to know some awesome people. They were always there for me when I needed them and even helped me through some tough times. Even though we all come from different places, we all get along great. We've all had a good time, working hard and having fun. I've been able to do so much more than I ever thought possible here at Sunway University!
Think big and set objectives for yourself, because when you know WHY you're doing something, the HOW becomes a lot simpler. When your plans are crystal clear, you'll know what to do to reach your goals. The world doesn't reward you for what you know, it rewards you for what you do.
